Intestinal worms are fairly common in particularly young dogs and cats, especially puppies and kittens, which in a lot of cases are born with intestinal parasites such as roundworms.  There are a variety of symptoms indicating possible intestinal parasites.

Symptoms of worms in family pets include:

Abdominal enlargement or bloating

Changes in appetite

Varying degrees of vomiting and/or diarrhea, depending upon the severity of the infestation

Pets with intestinal worms will typically have unkempt hair coats that are dull with an excessive amount of shedding also seen.  Many pet owners will typically erroneously feel that their family pets don’t have worms if they don’t visually see them in the stool. However, a lot of of the time microscopic exam of stool samples by veterinarians or veterinary laboratories is needed to diagnose intestinal parasites.  The exception to this would be seeing tapeworms, which typically appear like rice segments by the tail or anal area or often seen in the stool.

If family pets are heavily infested with roundworms, these can occasionally be seen  in the vomit as long spaghetti looking worms.  However, in a lot of cases of intestinal worm infestation, microscopic examination is needed for diagnosis and best treatment plans.  In cases of basic digestive upset many pet owners will typically try to worm their family pets at home first before going to a veterinarian.  Wormers like Drontal Plus, pet dog Worms 3 or Panacur C cover lots of types of worms. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, a veterinary exam is recommended, as overworming family pets can cause intestinal inflammation and potentially chronic digestive tract issues as well.

Most of the routine monthly heartworm preventative medications such as Sentinel or Heartgard Plus, consist of ingredients that also treat and control a lot of intestinal worms – making these pet medications a terrific benefit to pet owners and their pets.
